Improved rules to vehicle charging incentive programs in condos

In addition to pools, weight rooms, and car cleaning services, more condominiums may soon add electric vehicle charging systems to their list of amenities.

Announced on May 1st, 2018, the “Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program” has created new rules to reduce the red tape involved in installing charging stations.

When purchasing a condo unit, it’s important to understand what amenities are included in the property, including electric vehicle charging stations, and how they affect your costs and fees. A lawyer specifically focused on condo real estate transactions will help you identify these amenities, and how they will affect your payments going forward.

Announced by the Minister of Government and Consumer Services, and the parliamentary assistant to the Ministers of Transportation, and Environment and Climate Change, the new rules reduce the current criteria for condo corporations to install these charging stations.

One of the new rules of the program prevents condo boards from denying an owner’s application to install a charging station for their vehicle if the owner meets certain requirements.

Stats regarding the impact of installing charging stations in condos

    • Over 600,000 people live in condominiums in Ontario
    • 50% of upcoming new builds in the province are condominiums
    • The incentive program has already provided approximately $2.5 million for the creation of almost 3,000 charging stations across the province since 2013
    • There are approximately more than 18,500 electric vehicles on Ontario roads

Promoting greener vehicles across the province

To combat pollution and create a healthier environment, it’s important to remove barriers to greener vehicle choices. By making it easier for condominiums to install charging stations, the goal is to promote the purchase of vehicles less harmful to the environment.
